Boss Babes' request
Mood:  chillin'
Topic: work
Liza told me that Boss Babes wanted to have a document scanned and OCR-processed so he can e-mail it to other people.

I started at around 1:20pm. First I installed the ScanJet on his PC, then the software/drivers.

Finished scanning <40 pages at 2:45pm.

Now starting to check the OCR's work. :-)

Nimfa's Computer
Mood:  caffeinated
Now Playing: Sideshow - The Spinners
Topic: work
Replaced the LAN card today and cleaned the casing. While waiting for a station to become free for my use, I printed Board meeting reports and gave them to Liza.

After printing, I delivered Nimfa's PC to her station and configured its Network card, TCP/IP settings, etc.

Housecall found KLEZ in 3 or 4 folders and I deleted all the files.

Started SP2 install at around 12noon. Finished at 12:40pm, after a few aborted tries at Windows Update Custom install. :-(

Had lunch until 1:15pm-ish.

Meter Lab Computer trouble
Mood:  not sure
Topic: work
Jorge called me at around 8:30am while I was reading my email. He told me the meter lab computer won't boot.

I found the computer powered on but not "working." So I did these:

1. I powered off the UPS, and then switched it and the computer back on.

The computer went to the CMOS setup screen, so I rebooted it, but it wouldn't boot. Back to number 1.

I tried changing "Plug & Play O/S" from Yes to No, but it still wouldn't boot after restarting.

So I opened up the case and found that a small amount of dust had accumulated on one of the RAM chips. I cleaned it up with some natural air and a paint brush, and VOILA! The computer booted!

I restarted it once, for good measure, and #1 didn't re-occur anymore.

Work done.

Nimfa's computer
Mood:  energetic
Topic: work
At around 1:30pm, Nimfa complained that her PC restarts by itself while she's doing work on it.

I told her it might just be Windows XP's screen saver activating. I told her that WinXP sometimes seems not to be aware that the user is using the computer when s/he's working in a DOS app. But lo and behold, her PC started shutting down while we were still discussing the symptoms!

So I proceeded to her booth and starting observing her computer. I found out that her LAN card is connecting only at 10mbps, whichever of the available 2 UTP-5 cables is used.

I tried using TrendMicro's Housecall, a free online virus scanning engine. The download was about to finish when the PC restarted again!

It was already 3pm by then, and I couldn't do research on the net using her computer, so I went back to my station to do research on her problem, but I couldn't find anything!

I'm going to try changing her LAN card to see if it's the culprit. I'll be cleaning her PC, too, insofar as I'll be opening it up anyway.
